Panchakarma

Panchakarma is a unique contribution of Ayurveda with systematic approach that includes preparatory, major and post treatment protocols (Poorvakarma, pradhanakarma and paschathkarma).

Based on Ayurvedic fundamentals, body is made out of seven different types of tissues called Dhathus. These tissues are constantly nourished with food materials that get digested by the action of digestive power (Agni). It is then carried to corresponding tissues through body channels (Srothes) and activates absorption of nutrients with the help of digestive fire at each level. As a by-product of this process, waste materials are formed (Malas) and eventually eliminated.

The undigested materials (Ama) clog the body channels and manifest different disease conditions. When these materials get digested and disintegrated, they move in to the main channel (Koshtha).

During Panchakarma procedure, they are expelled through natural orifices. Panchakarma is not only used as curative treatment but also as preventive.

Panchakarma literally means five actions. They are Vamana (induced vomiting), Virechana (purgation), Vasthy (medicated enemas), Nasya (nasal medication) and Rektha moksha (blood letting). Major use of Panchakarma is purification of the body by which doshas are balanced to a state of equilibrium.

Ayurveda advices removal of waste materials accumulated in the body in different seasons for preventing disease caused by seasonal changes.

In Kerala, during July-August (Karkidaka), oil treatment and intake of special traditional ayurvedic medicine is very popular.

This is to alleviate Vatha accumulated in the body during summer and aggravated in rainy season. It also improves the natural immunity of a person to fight against possible spread of diseases during the season.

According to Ayurveda and other Indian philosophies, human and the universe are made up of five elements called Mahaboothas and Soul. Hence human body is a microcosm of the universe within itself.

In Ayurveda, the five elements in their biological form in the living body is known as Doshas (three vital doshas). These are mainly vatha, pitha and kafa. All activities and functions (normal or abnormal) of the body and mind are depended on the normal or abnormal state of these doshas.
